Baby Lesson #1 – Listen to your baby
Holy crap was last night tough. Jack was extremely fussy and we could not figure out why. At 1:00am, he was just cryyyyyyying. We checked his diaper several times, we fed him only an hour ago – so he shouldn’t be hungry, the nurse’s temperature reading was fine. The nurse even gave him some Tylenol thinking he might be in pain from his circumcision. In the end, he was just really, really hungry. We figured it out when he was still making hunger cues – during – breast feeding. So I gave him a small bottle of formula that was already in our room and….viola, he went to frickin’ town. He gulped down a little more than an ounce. That is a lot for a tiny 48hr old baby stomach. In fact, he’d been hungry the entire evening leading up this. We kept giving him a pacifier which only settled him short term but only prolonged his hunger. Poor little fella. We now offer him a little formula after each feeding to ensure he’s getting his fill. We done this all day and he been a very content baby
Kristen and I now have a new feeding schedule strategy and we will make sure that we are ‘feeding’ him when he gives those hunger cues rather than giving him that damn pacifier. Even if is only an hour after his last feeding…The nurses at this hospital, Metro Health, have the outstanding in their help with Jack. They are little slow on giving us information from various tests, but don’t even think twice about spending 1+ helping Kristen breastfeed or answer questions or give us tons of diapers and formula. Overall, I’m very pleased with our stay.
